Toyota Australia recalls close to 300,000 cars over power window issue

Toyota Australia will recall close to 300,000 cars to remedy an issue with the vehicles’ power window master switches as part of a global defect affecting about 6.5 million vehicles.

The recall affects certain Aurion, Camry, Corolla, Kluger, RAV4 and Yaris models in Australia built between August 2005 and August 2006 and January 2009 and December 2010.

Toyota explains the recall is a precautionary measure required because the vehicles’ power winder master switches may have been manufactured with an insufficient amount of grease.

If insufficient grease was applied the switch may develop a short circuit that can cause the switch assembly to overheat and melt. In the worst case, the switch can produce smoke and potentially lead to a fire.

Toyota Australia is still assessing the scale of the issue, though in a statement it says it is expected that “less than 300,000 vehicles will be involved”. The issue also affects approximately 2.7 million vehicles in North America, 1.2 million in Europe and 600,000 in Japan.

The company stresses that there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to the issue in Australia.

The recall follows a previous campaign in October 2012, where 297,931 vehicles across the same six model lines built between 2006 and 2010 were recalled due a defect related to the incorrect application of lubricating grease inside the power window master switch. Toyota says motorists involved in this previous campaign will not be impacted by the latest recall.

Toyota will contact affected owners and ask them to make an appointment at their local dealership. Dealer will inspect the power window master switch circuit board and apply heat-resistant grease to the switch. The switch will be replaced if it is already demonstrating signs of malfunction.

The rectification service will take approximately one hour to complete, and will be conducted free of charge.
