2016 Jaguar XF pricing and specifications

The all-new, aluminium-rich and more technologically advanced 2016 Jaguar XF will make its Australian debut in early February, the British carmaker has confirmed.

Kicking off from $82,800 plus on-road costs for the base-level Prestige 20d diesel model, the cost of entry into the new XF range is markedly higher than the eight year-old car it replaces, which currently kicks off at $74,285 â€" before any ‘end of life’ bargaining sharpens it further.

That’s to be expected, however. The outgoing model began its life in Australia at north of $100,000, only coming down over the years in recognition of its age and as part of a two-pronged play in both the mid- and large-sized premium car markets.

Speaking with media today, Jaguar Australia managing director Matthew Wiesner noted that while the previous model “had a couple of jobs”, the new XF will play “in its correct position”.

“Given that we’ve got XE in the marketplace doing its job below it in the medium segment, XF can perform its rightful role, sitting on top of XE,” Wiesner said.

The increase in price is not without a significant increase in technology and equipment, however.

As with the smaller XE, the new British-built XF is built on a new aluminium-intensive architecture, joined by new comfort and safety technologies, and a new ‘Ingenium’ 2.0-litre diesel engine.

And, while other engines will be carry-over fare initially, new petrol mills will be introduced in the near future.

For now, the engine line-up will consist of a 132kW 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel, a 177kW 2.0 petrol, a 220kW diesel, and a 3.0 litre petrol six in 250kW and 280kW forms.

The 132kW/430Nm 2.0-litre diesel unit replaces the previous 2.2-litre diesel.

Jaguar promises a lighter and more efficient design with the new XF. It is also more spacious, with 15mm more legroom, 24mm knee room and 27mm more headroom than before.

At 4945mm, the new XF is 16mm shorter than its predecessor, but its 2960mm wheelbase is a huge 51mm longer than before.

The 2016 XF’s new platform also means there’s weight savings in the neighbourhood of 190kg, matched to an increase in torsional stiffness of up to 28 percent.

New technologies include All-Surface Progress Control for enhanced traction on low-friction surfaces, along with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, intelligent speed limiter and semi-automated parking.

The range will consist of four trim grades: XF Prestige, XF R-Sport, XF Portfolio, and XF S.

High-spec models will get a 10.2-inch touch display with InControl Touch Pro, along with a 825W Meridian audio system with 17 speakers.

There’s also a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel, with four visual models and full-screen navigation display.

The new XF is the first Jaguar to offer adaptive full-LED headlights, boasting two banks of LEDs and reflectors for each headlight assembly.

Full range specifications are still to come, although Jaguar has today confirmed key features in the entry-level Prestige 20d.
