Hyundai Australia has announced a recall on previous-generation Elantra sedan and i30 hatch models over concerns that the vehicleâs power-steering system could fail.
Hyundai reports that the motor-driven power-steering system in both the i30 and Elantra, which are related mechanically, could suffer a loss of power, which will increase steering effort.
As with much older vehicles not equipped with power-steering, the defect can cause steering to become heavy, potentially causing a hazard to the driver and other road users.
The fault applies models sold across Australia between November 1 2009, and April 30 2010.
The build numbers for affected i30 models range between KMHDC81TMAU064300 to KMHDC51TMAU267226, and for the Elantra the build numbers range between
KMHDU41DAAU929998 to KMHDT41B9BU084665.
Hyundai has confirmed it will write to affected owners to make arrangements for either repair or a software update, although concerned owners can visit a Hyundai dealership to have the power-steering system inspected.
