Ferrari to adopt modular platform from 2017 – report

The next-generation of Ferrari vehicles will reportedly utilise a new modular platform that’s currently under development.

According to Automobile, the new modular platform will debut in 2017 and will be used on all future Ferrari vehicles, except for, perhaps, high-performance limited-edition models and the V6-powered Dino.

The new platform is said to be based around an aluminium spaceframe, and has been designed to accommodate both front- and mid-engine vehicles, as well as various drivetrains, suspension setups and electrical components. The new setup will allow for more efficient production, as well as reduced development costs.

The first vehicle to be spawned from the soon-to-be independent brand’s new modular platform will be the new California, which is believed to be scheduled in for a 2017 debut. This vehicle, according to the magazine, will be lower and lighter, but will still use a power folding hardtop.

Next up is a replacement for the FF, which, it’s said, will ditch the current car’s V12 engine favour of a version of the twin-turbo V8 powering the 488. The American publication understands the FF will remain a front-engine four-seat vehicle, but that gull-wing doors are possibility.

Ferrari will reportedly retain the V12 engine layout for the car that eventually replaces the F12.

Should a new V6-powered Dino be green lit to provide a more cost effective pathway to buy into the Ferrari brand, it will use a shortened and, possibly, narrower version of the platform underpinning the recently unveiled mid-engine 488.
