2016 Mazda CX-9 captured on video with less camouflage

The second-generation Mazda CX-9 has been filmed in the canyons around Los Angeles.

Unlike the photos that were captured earlier this month, this CX-9 prototype isn’t clad in swirly camouflage. The video (above) was captured by Carspotter Jeroen and posted to their YouTube page.

As can be seen in the video, and earlier photos, the new CX-9 fully embraces the Kodo design language that’s been used successfully on the smaller CX-3 and CX-5 SUVs, as well as the rest of the Mazda range.

Compared to the current car, the new CX-9 seems to feature chunkier wheel arches, flagpole-style wing mirrors and longer rear doors. The new CX-9 is expected debut at the Los Angeles motor show, which takes place in November this year.

Industry rumours suggest that the new CX-9 will switch from the current car’s Ford-supplied V6 to a turbocharged version of the company’s in-house 2.5-litre SkyActiv four-cylinder petrol engine.

In 2014 when Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s global head of sales and marketing, talked to Car Advice about the next-generation large SUV, he fanned the flames of speculation when he noted that “turbocharging technology has improved a lot” since the time of the CX-7’s turbo 2.3-litre motor.

Whatever the case is, it’s unlikely that the new SUV will be offered with a turbo-diesel engine. “With the CX-9 the main market is the USA [and] … these customers don’t have a strong preference towards diesel engines,” Moro stated.
