The Mazda 2 hatch has received a specification update coinciding with the launch of the new Mazda 2 sedan.
The entry-level Mazda 2 Neo gains cruise control and rear parking sensors for no extra cost, with prices remaining unchanged at $14,990 plus on-road costs for the manual and $16,990 for the auto.
The mid-tier Mazda 2 Maxx is the big winner from the update, gaining the MZD Connect infotainment system with 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, multi-function commander rotary control, reverse-view camera, and an enhanced six-speaker audio system with internet radio integration (works with Pandora, Stitcher and Aha).
Maxx prices rise $700 on the back of the equipment upgrade, taking the manual to $17,690 and the auto to $19,690. The fitment of the 7.0-inch screen means satellite navigation is now available in the Maxx, and can be optioned in for $570.
The introduction of LED headlights to the flagship Mazda 2 Genki also pushes up its price by $700 to $20,690 for the manual and $22,690 for the auto.
The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system continues as a $400 option across the Mazda 2 range.
Joining the $250 red interior colour option for the Maxx is a new $1390 S Pack for the Genki, which adds soft-touch off-white panels with white stitching across the centre console, front door armrests and dashboard panel; high-gloss white plastic on the front door armrests; and off-white and black leather and cloth seat upholstery. SCBS is also included in the price of the S Pack.
Mazda Australia believes its upgraded Mazda 2 range (hatch and sedan) will average 1200 sales per month over the next year, which will make it one of the most popular city cars in the country.
So far this year the Mazda 2 hatch alone has averaged 1231 sales per month, suggesting Mazdaâs latest estimates may be conservative.
The sedan could give the baby Mazda the boost it needs to overtake the Toyota Yaris as Australiaâs favourite city car. The Yaris currently holds a narrow lead over the 2 in 2015, at 8968 units versus 8619.
