The all-new 2016 Astra is out in force this month, with a hot GSi variant spied testing recently and the new Sports Tourer wagon version caught on the road just this week.
These new photos, taken outside of Opel’s Ruesselsheim headquarters in Germany, confirm that we can expect the Astra Sports Tourer to maintain a practical wagon design focused on cargo capacity.
As with its predecessor, the new wagon will feature a tall roofline above a tapered glasshouse, creating a sporting look while retaining that crucial interior space.
Expect the wagon to ride on the same 23mm shorter wheelbase that underpins the new hatch, with additional rear storage coming through the extended rear overhang shown in these photos.
This prototype’s light layer of camouflage could also be disguising its own version of the jagged wrap-around D-pillar design featured on the hatch model, although we might instead see a more conventional look for the wagon model.
These photos also reveal the new Astra in a more entry-level trim, wearing the same sports-style front bumper of the already revealed hatch, but with smaller capped steel wheels at each corner.
Engine options for the new wagon are expected to mirror those of the hatch, which means 70kW 1.6-litre diesel, 77kW 1.0-litre turbo petrol and 107kW 1.4-litre turbo petrol engines.
An Australian debut for the new Astra range is still to be confirmed, although Holden has previously confirmed that at least one-third of its future line-up will be sourced from Opel.
Whether that will include the new Astra is unclear, although it is possible that Holden will offer this new model alongside the next-generation Cruze sedan.
