2016 Mitsubishi Challenger spied undisguised

The next-generation Mitsubishi Challenger off-roader has been spotted completely undisguised on the streets of Bangkok.

Captured by a Tawunap Eemnoob during filming of a television commercial, these images were originally posted on the Headlight Magazine forums.

The look of the new SUV was accurately predicted by leaked patent renderings, as well as spy photos, and show that next-gen Challenger will feature a much bolder style that bears much less of a relationship to the Triton ute, with which it still shares its underpinnings and mechanical package.

Up front, the 2016 Challenger adopts a version of the “dynamic shield” face that made its debut on the facelifted Outlander crossover. At the rear, the tail-light design, which features spears that drip Dali-esque down alongside the tailgate, will likely cause much debate.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Challenger will be officially launched in August 1 in Thailand. As with the current model, Australia-bound models will likely be sourced from the company’s factory in Thailand.

The Challenger, known in some markets as the Pajero Sport, is expected to be powered by a new 133kW/430Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which does service under the bonnet of the recently launched Triton ute.

When the new Challenger goes on sale in Australia, it will once again square up against other Thai-made, ute-based SUVs, such as the Holden Colorado 7 and the Isuzu MU-X. It will also face stiff competition from the new-to-Australia Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner, which have previously denied to Australian consumers.
