BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer revealed

The all-new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer â€" the brand’s first ever seven-seat mini van â€" has been revealed ahead of its debut at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is said to “carve out yet another new vehicle segment”, with the European-focused small MPV-cum-wagon stretching the practicality on offer in the smaller 2 Series Active Tourer.

The Gran Tourer model measures 4556 millimetres long, 1800mm wide and 1608mm tall â€" making it 214mm longer and 53mm taller than the five-seat model. The boot space on offer can expand between 645 and 805 litres, while with the seats folded down in the third and second rows there is 1905L of claimed cargo capacity.

There are standard 40:20:40 electric folding second row seats which can also be slid fore and aft, while the optional third row seats are able to be lowered into the boot floor.

Engine offerings for the 2 Series Gran Tourer include an all-turbocharged range. There are some familiar three-cylinder and four-cylinder powertrains including petrol and diesel offerings, as well as front- and all-wheel-drive models on offer.

BMW Australia general manager of corporate communications Lenore Fletcher told CarAdvice that the local arm doesn’t currently see a need for the car in its showrooms.

“At this point we don’t have any major plans to bring it in to Australia,” Fletcher said, suggesting the smaller 2 Series Active Tourer is a better fit for the market.

“The first couple of months of that car have been very good. But I’m not saying never [to the 2 Series Gran Tourer],” she said.
