The new Land Rover Discovery Sport will start from $53,300 when it goes on sale in Australia from May 1.
Land Roverâs replacement for the Freelander 2 is being pushed more upmarket as the British 4WD brand aims to close the sales gap to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment.
An upcoming two-wheel-drive variant has yet to be confirmed for Australia that would likely see the Discovery Sport starting point drop below $50,000 as with the Freelander, though for now the new model offers more standard equipment than its equivalent predecessor.
Navigation, electric tailgate, electrically adjustable front seats and autonomous emergency braking are notable features now included from base model upwards.
A key option of a third row for $1990 turns the Discovery Sport into the first seven-seater in its segment â"Â and gives it a significant point of difference over the style-focused twin itâs based on, the Range Rover Evoque.
A six-speed manual gearbox is standard with the two diesel engine options â" TD4 and SD4 â" with a nine-speed auto $2500 extra. The petrol Si4 is auto only and priced from $59,000.
The diesels, however, will be replaced in Europe later this year with a new eD4 four-cylinder turbo diesel from Jaguar Land Roverâs new âIngeniumâ modular engine family, promising CO2 emissions of just 119 grams per kilometre. That compares with the lowest CO2 figure of 159g/km produced by the TD4 manual.
The new diesel is likely to reach Australia in early 2016.
Land Rover  models are initially four-wheel drive â" with a permanent set-up as standard, though for $1620 the SD4 and Si4 models can be equipped with an Active Driveline that can alter the torque distribution between the rear wheels via the brakes and can also decouple the rear axle to make the Discovery Sport front-wheel drive in normal driving to help save fuel.
Multi-mode Terrain Response continues to be standard to allow different vehicle settings for variable conditions/surfaces.
Trim grades are again SE (all engines), HSE (diesels only) and HSE Luxury (SD4 only).
The Land Rover Discovery Sport also debuts JLRâs new touchscreen infotainment system.
