The hottest street-legal Renaultsport Megane in history will launch in June with its sights set on reclaiming the lap record for a front-wheel-drive car around the Nurburgring.
The French performance car division is running a social media campaign dubbed â#under8â, hinting at its intentions to set a sub-eight-minute lap of the âRing in its Megane RS265 hot-hatch.
The Seat Leon Cupra 280 smashed the Meganeâs three-year-old 8:07.97 lap record last month, clocking a time of 7:58.44 to set the new benchmark around the 20.8km circuit.
A teaser image released as part of the campaign suggests the new Renaultsport variant will be fitted with Michelin tyres, Ohlins suspension and an Akrapovic exhaust system, while BRM is also listed, likely for its involvement as the official timekeeper of the record attempt.
The record-hunting version of the French hot-hatch will be based on the facelifted Renault Megane, which debuted at Septemberâs Frankfurt motor show and is destined to reach Australian showrooms in the coming months.
Itâs unclear at this stage if the teased high-performance model will get a power boost over the regular RS265 or retain its standard 195kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbo engine.
Expect more details in the lead-up to Renaultsportâs June 16 announcement.
