Suzuki SX4 S-Cross: pricing and specifications

The all-new Suzuki SX4 S-Cross has launched in Australia, priced from $22,990.

Unveiled as a concept at the 2012 Paris motor show last September and in production form at Geneva in March, Suzuki claims the new S-Cross offers greater levels of refinement, interior space and fuel economy than the original SX4 hatch that launched in Australia in 2007.

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is available in three grades â€" GL, GLX and GLX Prestige â€" all with a 86kW/156Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The engine is matched with a five-speed manual or an optional automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the entry-level GL grade.

GLX and GLX Prestige models come standard with the CVT with a ‘seven-speed’ manual mode, allowing the driver to shift up and down using the steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters.

The S-Cross is also available with Suzuki’s new-generation AWD system dubbed ‘All Grip’, featuring four driver-selectable modes: auto, sport, snow, and lock. AWD is optional on the mid-spec GLX and standard on the GLX Premium.

The new-generation SX4 S-Cross is 100kg lighter than the previous Suzuki SX4, despite growing in size.

At 4300mm long, 1765mm wide and 1575mm tall, the new Suzuki S-Cross is 150mm longer, 10mm wider and 30mm lower than the original.

Its wheelbase has also grown 101mm to 2601mm, providing a more spacious interior and larger luggage capacity, up from 253 litres to 430L.

The entry-level GL comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, cruise control, tilt/reach adjustable steering wheel with audio controls, four-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming.

The $29,990 mid-spec GLX 2WD (GLX AWD from $32,990) adds 17-inch alloy wheels, HID headlamps with auto-on function, LED positioning lamps, rain-sensing wipers, rear-view camera, reversing sensors, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 6.1-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, and an enhanced seven-speaker audio system.

The range-topping $34,990 GLX Prestige AWD gains leather upholstery and a double-sliding panoramic sunroof.

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross has already earned the maximum five-star safety rating from independent crash-tester Euro NCAP and includes electronic stability control, seven airbags (including driver’s knee airbag), and a number of other active and passive systems.

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross will compete with a new breed of subcompact SUV rivals, including the Ford EcoSport, Holden Trax, Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, Skoda Yeti and Nissan Dualis.

Expect the SX4 S-Cross to be in showrooms from January 1.
