Porsche 911: facelifted 991 spied, could hint at upcoming GTS variant

A Porsche 911 prototype has been spied in Germany with only subtle camouflage and mild body work changes, suggesting a facelift for the 991 is on the horizon and possibly also a new variant.

With early speculation on the car mixed, some believe the Porsche 911 snapped by CarAdvice’s spy photographers is merely an update for the 991, likely due in late 2014 for the 2015 model year, while others suggest it could be a next-generation Carrera GTS.

Released in 2011, and debuting the facelifted 997 911, the previous Porsche 911 Carrera GTS was a rear-wheel-drive model available in both Coupe and Cabriolet body styles with a wider rear end and rear track borrowed from the Carrera 4. Later followed by a four-wheel-drive Carrera 4-based version, the previous GTS sat between the Carrera S and the Turbo and was powered by a 300kW/420Nm 3.8-litre flat-six engine.

With a wider body, new headlights and a new front bumper with revised three-slat air intakes and disguised LED daytime running lights, the black test car also has mocked up LED tail-lights and a new rear bumper with side venting. Mixed design gloss and matt black wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber, cross-drilled brake discs and a quad-exit exhaust can also be seen.

If a future Porsche 911 Carrera GTS model eventuates, it would likely follow previously discussed GTS versions of the Boxster and Cayman twins. Detailed in slides at a US dealer meeting back in October and slated for an April 2014 premiere at the Beijing motor show, the Boxster and Cayman GTS models would sit above their respective S variants and feature more power, unique body work and 20-inch Carrera S wheels.
