The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG has been revealed ahead of its official unveiling at Septemberâs Frankfurt motor show.
The all-new S63 AMG will become the performance flagship in Mercedes-Benz Australiaâs sixth-generation S-Class sedan line-up, arriving in local showrooms in December with an anticipated price tag close to $400,000.
The new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is powered by a retuned version of its predecessorâs 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine. The twin-turbocharged powerplant produces 430kW of power at 5500rpm and 900Nm of torque between 2250-3750rpm â" representing an increase of 30kW/100Nm over the current S63 AMG, and 10kW over the current model with the optional performance package.
The power boost sees the new S63 AMG slice one tenth of a second off its 0-100km/h sprint time, stopping the clock at 4.4sec. A new all-wheel-drive long-wheelbase version slashes that time to 4.0sec, though like the all-wheel-drive E63 AMG, it will be produced only in left-hand drive and will therefore not be available in Australia.
Despite the performance gains, combined cycle fuel consumption improves five per cent to 10.1 litres per 100km, while CO2 emissions average 237g/km, meeting Euro 6 standards.
Weighing 1970-1995kg depending on wheelbase length, Mercedes says the S63 AMG is now up to 100kg lighter than before largely thanks to its adoption of 19-inch AMG forged light alloy wheels, a lithium-ion battery, and weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brakes. Lightweight aluminium is also used for the front end of the body and the roof, while carbonfibre is installed in the spare wheel recess.
The AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps works in tandem with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissionâs three driving modes â" Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual â" to provide engine sounds to suit the dynamism of the selected mode.
Rear-wheel-drive S63 AMGs are fitted standard with Mercedesâ new Magic Body Control suspension system, which uses a windscreen-mounted camera to recognise road surface undulations and adjust the suspension in advance to suit the conditions.
The S63 is distinguished from the rest of the new S-Class range by its aggressively styled front end with gaping air intakes and chrome splitter, âV8 BITURBOâ badging, black diffuser and chrome-tipped quad exhaust outlets.
Unique interior touches include an AMG sports steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles, carbonfibre dash inserts, IWC analogue clock, embossed AMG logo on the centre console lid, and AMG-specific displays in the digital instrument cluster.
