2013 BMW Z4 update revealed ahead of Detroit debut

The 2013 BMW Z4 has been revealed ahead of the updated roadster’s official unveiling at next month’s Detroit motor show.

The mid-life upgrade introduces a handful of subtle exterior tweaks and cabin refinements to the BMW Z4 range, along with a new, more fuel-efficient entry-level variant.

The Z4 sDrive18i features a 115kW/240Nm tune of the German brand’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, taking 7.9 seconds to accelerate from 0-100km/h and consuming 6.8 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

The new model won’t form part of the updated range when it arrives in local showrooms in mid 2013, however, with BMW Australia deciding to stick with the Z4 sDrive20i as its base model, unconvinced there is demand for a less powerful model in our market.

The Australian line-up will continue in its current form, featuring sDrive20i, sDrive28i and sDrive35is variants, with prices likely to mirror the current $76,900-$120,000 range.

Minor revisions to the headlights freshen the Z4’s face, while tapered chrome details around the side indicators add an understated dynamism to its profile.

Inside, the 2013 BMW Z4 upgrades to gloss black air vents and iDrive control surrounds, while Fineline Anthracite wood joins the optional trim list.

Three new paint colours are available â€" Mineral Grey, Glacier Silver and Valencia Orange â€" as well as the new Design Pure Traction equipment package, which adds contrasting orange stitching across the black leather upholstery, alcantara door fabrics and metal weave trim inserts.

Australian pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the arrival of the updated BMW Z4 around the middle of next year.

BMW has sold 115 Z4s in Australia so far in 2012 â€" one fewer than over the same period in 2011.
