2013 Audi RS6 Avant: 400kW wagon revealed

The first official details and images of the 2013 Audi RS6 Avant have been released ahead of the super-wagon’s expected reveal at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March.

Showing a unique front bumper design with bold side air intakes and matt aluminium accents, the Audi RS6 also differentiates itself from its RS5 sibling with a large ‘quattro’ logo stamped onto the lower part of the familiar Audi honeycomb mesh grille.

Sharp LED headlights up front match LED units on the rear, joined by an aggressive rear diffuser, dual RS-style oval exhaust pipes and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. Staple ‘S’ and ‘RS’ brushed aluminium wing mirrors again feature, as do brushed aluminium roof rails.

Inside is dripping with high-quality materials, including leather, carbonfibre and piano black highlights and features heavily-bolstered ‘RS6’-embossed sport seats with diamond quilting, along with two alloy-finish pedals and a footrest.

Being roughly 100kg lighter than the 2025kg previous generation RS6, performance from the new RS6 Avant’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 powerplant is assured. With a power figure of 412kW and 700Nm of torque available from 1750rpm, the quattro all-wheel drive family wagon on steroids will hit three figures in 3.9 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 305km/h.

With thanks to the new Audi RS6’s cylinder on demand technology and eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles, fuel consumption is managed at 9.8 liters per 100km on the European driving cycle.

For gadget lovers, the driver information system (DIS) now includes a shift light feature with segments illuminated in green as the revs increase, turning to red and flashing when approaching the car’s red line.

Spied earlier this year testing at Germany’s Nurburgring, the Audi RS6 Avant sits on high-gloss 20-inch forged wheels and scores a wider track and 390mm wave design brake discs up front with six-piston calipers. Optional carbon-ceramic brake discs measuring 420mm are also available.

Audi Australia’s Shaun Cleary confirmed to CarAdvice that the Audi RS6 will definitely be coming to Australia, with an expected arrival date in the fourth quarter of 2013.
