Last year, the Volvo S60 Polestar managed to set a record for a four-door production car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
In the hands of Cyan Racing, the racing team that was spun off from Polestar when the tuner was bought by Volvo two years ago, a road-legal Volvo S60 Polestar completed a lap of that famed long and winding road in seven minutes 51.110 seconds.
It’s not known if Polestar or Cyan Racing modified the car from showroom-spec for its record setting run, which took place after the 2016 WTCC Race of Germany at the Nurburgring.
Since May 2016, the S60 Polestar’s time has been bested by the Honda Civic Type-R (seven minutes 43.8 seconds) and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (seven minutes 32 seconds).
At the time of the record lap, the S60 Polestar was being transitioned away from the original model’s 257kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six to the newer, lighter 270kW/470Nm 2.0-litre turbo Drive-E four-cylinder mill.
According to Cyan Racing, setting a lap record wasn’t the purpose of the run. Instead, the companies were hoping to glean important data that would help with future road and track car development.
They claim the data was so important, the lap time had to be kept secret until now.
