No MPS models or luxury sub-brand on the cards for Mazda

Despite the alphabetic growth of AMG, F, M, N, RS and SVO performance sub-brands, Mazda will not be adding another letter to their lineup

At this week’s 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, CarAdvice spoke with Masamichi Kogai, president and CEO of Mazda Corporation, who again confirmed that MPS fans will continue to go without for the foreseeable future.

Kogai-san said that Mazda’s policy is centered around technology and innovation and that the performance and enjoyment of driving is included as part of the inherent development in all Mazda vehicles.

“There is no need for the MPS or MazdaSpeed sub-brand, as all [Mazda] models provide driving enjoyment,” he said.

He added that, although it fits, Mazda has no plans to slot the new 2016 CX-9‘s SkyActivG 2.5T motor (above) into the CX-5, Mazda 3 or Mazda 6.

This policy extends to the suggestion that Mazda could revisit the concept of a separate luxury brand, like those of its Asian rivals: Toyota’s Lexus, Nissan’s Infiniti and, most recently, Hyundai’s Genesis.

Kogai san says that any other brands or model lines are a distraction to the ongoing improvement of the Mazda brand and line-up, which still stands firm on a philosophy of exceptional products at affordable prices.
