Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night, Wrangler Backcountry special editions revealed

Jeep has prepared a pair of special edition 4x4s for this week’s 2015 Los Angeles auto show: the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night and the Jeep Wrangler Backcountry.

The Grand Cherokee SRT Night gains a number of unique stealthy trim finishes inside and out. The roof, rear spoiler, front grille bezels, B- and C-pillars and side window surrounds are gloss black, while the grille surround, front and rear badging, and lightweight ‘5Ten’ 20-inch alloy wheels have a satin black finish.

The theme continues inside, where the SRT Night features light black chrome trim highlights and is upholstered with Black Laguna leather with silver stitching.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night special edition will be available with Velvet Red, Billet Silver and Granite Crystal paint finishes.

The Night is mechanically identical to the regular Grand Cherokee SRT, retaining its monstrous 344kW/624Nm 6.4-litre V8 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive underpinnings, along with its 5.0-second 0-100km/h ability.

Joining it on the brand’s LA stand will be the Wrangler Backcountry, which brings a winter theme to the hardcore off-roader.

Backcountry decals on the front and rear corner panels, powder-coated front and rear bumpers, mid-gloss black 17-inch Rubicon wheels, Rubicon rock rails, and a black hardtop and matching fuel flap distinguish the special edition Wrangler from the Sahara variant on which it’s based. Sahara side steps and a body-colour roof will also be available optionally.

Five paint colours will be offered: Hydro Blue, Black, Bright White, Granite Crystal, and the exclusive Xtreme Purple.

The Wrangler Backcountry gets further special treatment inside, gaining a nine-speaker Alpine sound system, black McKinley leather seat bolsters with sports mesh inserts, vinyl-wrapped console lid and armrests with Diesel Grey stitching, all-weather slush mats, and piano black vent rings, door handles and grab handles.

Fiat Chrysler Australia says it can’t confirm at this stage if either special edition is headed to our shores, but admits it’s “looking at them closely”, particularly the Grand Cherokee SRT Night given the popularity of that model range among local customers.
