The Renault Coupe Corbusier concept celebrates the 50th anniversary of the death of Le Corbusier, the Swiss-French architect, artist and urban planner.
Renault revealed the concept car overnight at the Villa Savoye, a building completed by Le Corbusier in the 1931.
Now considered to be of the best examples of the “International Styleâ€, the villa looks perfectly normal to many observers, but at the time it was ground breaking because it was raised off the ground, used reinforced concrete, had an open floor plan, featured full width windows and had a functional roof.
According to Renault, the concept’s designers were inspired by Le Corbusier’s “ideas of simplicity, visible and aesthetically-assumed structure, geometric elegance and mastery of lightâ€.
The Coupe Corbusier will be displayed at the Villa Savoye as part of “Cars for living: the automobile and modernism in the 20th and 21st centuries†exhibition organised by the French government’s Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
Born in Switzerland in 1887, Le Corbusier died in 1965. Le Corbusier is considered one of the founders of what’s now considered to be modern architecture.
On top of designing buildings, Le Corbusier was a painter, and was also active in urban planning, with a particular interest in the effect of the automobile on the shape, layout and design of cities.
Le Corbusier is credited for laying out the planned city of Chandigarh in northern India.
