2016 Porsche 911 ‘R’ spy photos

Our spy photographers have spotted what could well be the rumoured Porsche 911 ‘R’, which has natural aspiration, a manual gearbox, and concentrates on driver feedback and involvement.

Reports surfaced around the middle of the year that Porsche was working on a new “hardcore” model that would focus more on driving purity than lap times or outright speed.

These photos seem to be evidence that just such a car is around the corner and the new variant looks as though it uses the standard width body from the Carrera models.

The car is said to be part of the 911 GT range, at least conceptually, and will feature a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with around 375kW of power. Drive will go to the rear wheels via a seven-speed manual transmission.

As such, it will serve as a counterpoint to the newly facelifted 911 Carrera models, which now all sport a 3.0-litre boxer engine in various states of tune. It will also provide enthusiasts with an alternative to the dual clutch-only GT3.

Visually, the new model is differentiated by new front and rear fascias that are little bit more aggressive, with larger air intakes up front and a pair of a closely spaced exhaust tips out the back.

The sills are more sharply defined too, but, if the rumour mill proves to be correct, the new model will do without any large wings or aerodynamic addenda.

Latest rumours indicate that the new variant might be badged as the 911 R. Depending on which reports you read, the R could be a new permanent member of the 911 team with availability constrained by premium pricing, or the new variant may be a limited edition model.

The new 911 model could debut as early as March during the 2016 Geneva motor show.
