2016 Nissan Maxima revealed in Superbowl advertisement

The all-new 2016 Nissan Maxima has been revealed as part of the Japanese brand’s Superbowl ad campaign.

In terms of its design, the new Nissan Maxima borrows plenty from the Nissan Sport Sedan concept model that was shown at the 2014 Detroit auto show, with a bold front end incorporating a prominent chrome grille and sharply-styled headlights.

With a swooping roofline the Maxima looks almost like a hatchback rather than a sedan in profile, but the rear of the car â€" with its broad tail-lights and thick bumper â€" reaffirms it as the biggest sedan the brand makes.

Full details are yet to be revealed, but it is expected that the Maxima will be powered with similar engines to the Pathfinder SUV, including a 3.5-litre V6 and a hybrid version that teams a battery pack with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder supercharged unit.

The car is made for the US market, and Nissan Australia has confirmed there are “no plans” for the Maxima to be introduced to the local market, where it would sit above the Altima mid-size sedan.

Also making an appearance in the advertisement was the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, a hybrid racer that will compete in the LM P1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship. Under the bonnet of that car is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 that works in conjunction with a kinetic energy recovery system, which is capable of about 930kW of power in race conditions.
