Jaguar XE :: diesel engine details revealed

The Jaguar XE sedan’€™s all-new diesel engine will consume less fuel than a Toyota Prius and produce almost as much torque as the brand’€™s F-Type sports car.
The British luxury car maker today confirmed the XE will initially be available with two tunes of Jaguar Land Rover’€™s new ‘€˜Ingenium’€™ 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine.

The first will produce 120kW of power and 380Nm, and will deliver combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres and average CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometre. It’€™s understood those figures apply to the six-speed manual version that is highly unlikely to be offered in Australia, though the eight-speed automatic destined for our market is expected to return similarly slim figures.

The figures make the XE the most efficient Jaguar in the brand’€™s history, and promise to either put it on par with its German rivals for torque or better them for economy, or both.

The equivalent Audi A4 produces 130kW and 380Nm and uses 5.3L/100km, the BMW 320d 135kW and 380Nm and 4.5L/100km, and the Mercedes-Benz C250 BlueTec 150kW, 500Nm and 4.5L/100km.

Those competitors are priced between $59,900 and $70,400, giving us some indication of where the entry Jaguar XE diesel will be positioned when it reaches Australian showrooms around August 2015.

The XE will also be available with a more powerful 132kW/430Nm tune of the same engine. Jaguar is yet to release its fuel consumption and CO2 figures, though they’€™re set to be marginally higher than those of the lower-powered version.
The diesel engines are the first to be introduced, and will be joined at launch by two tunes of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine from the Ingenium family.

No power, torque, performance or fuel use details have been revealed to date, but the brand says the petrol engines ‘€œare powerful and refined and generate strong torque from low speeds, ensuring excellent launch performance and mid-range response’.

The sporty Jaguar XE S will inherit its supercharged 3.0-litre V6 from the F-Type. It will produce 250kW, 450Nm and will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds.

Jaguar is set to reveal additional details of the XE over the coming days as the crucial new model makes its motor show debut in Paris. CarAdvice will be live at the show and will bring you all the news as it comes to hand.
