Further details of the all-new Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid have been revealed, with the brandâs first plug-in model offering plenty of tech and mountains of power.
The S500 Plug-in Hybrid combines a twin-turbo petrol V6 engine with an 80kW electric motor. The combination offers up maximum power of 325kW and maximum torque of 650Nm, and enables the 5.1-metre-long luxury limousine to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds.
Astonishingly, the plug-in hybrid model has a claimed fuel use figure of just 2.8 litres per 100 kilometres, with the German maker claiming the car will be the âfirst luxury sedan with a certified consumption below three litres per 100kmâ.
The company had originally predicted fuel use of âless than 3.3L/100kmâ and peak power of 245kW.
The S-Class Plug-in Hybrid is also expected to be the first production model from the brand to feature a plug-less recharging system, according to reports, following the brandâs announcement that it has teamed with BMW to develop and rollout inductive wireless recharging systems.
Mercedes-Benz Australia manager of public relations and product communications Jerry Stamoulis told CarAdvice the car isnât priority number one for the brand.
âWe are considering it,â Stamoulis said. âAnd it is available to us. But weâve just launched the S300 Hybrid model, and the cost of the plug-in hybrid would be a lot higher than that.
âWe wonât rule out S500 Plug-in Hybrid, but it isnât a priority at this point,â he said.
The decision to hold fire on the new plug-in version could come down to its predicted low volume and the fact it would require in-depth training for workshop and dealership staff.
The current S-Class range is hardly low on options, with the company offering seven models ranging from $195,000 to $415,000.
The S500 Plug-in Hybrid is set to be launched in Europe from September.
