BMWÂ is looking to expand its X range of SUVs even further.
BMW revealed the new X4 coupe-style SUV at the 2014 New York auto show overnight, bringing the brandâs high-rider range to a total of five (X1, X3, X4, X5, X6), while a new X7 has also been confirmed to take on the likes of the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benzâs GL-Class from 2017.
BMW member of the board of management for sales and marketing Ian Robertson told CarAdvice the brand is looking for more SUV niches.
âWe havenât been shy at developing new segments for the X models. We lead the field. Where weâve developed models, others are now a generation or so behind us. I can tell you that this is a segment weâre very active in,â he said, but wouldnât confirm if a rumoured X2 was one such model, nor would he comment on a model smaller than the X1.
âWeâve now brought the X4. Maybe in the future there will be other X models, but for today, itâs all about the launch of this new product and what weâre doing in the US,â he said at the east coast show.
âWe have really developed the X segment from the start,â he said. âWhen we brought the X6 out six years ago now, a lot of people said, âIs this the right product for the future?â 240,000 sales later, it is.â
When asked whether he thought the world was ready for another coupe-style SUV, Robertson suggest the new model could be a better size for more buyers.
âX3 is sold out in every country in the world, so I fully suspect this car will be a runaway success,â he said.
The BMW X4 is set to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2014.
